Babbits are special alloys based on tin with additions of lead and other metals. They are named after the American inventor I. Babbit. Such alloys have high antifriction properties; low coefficient of friction. They are used for filling bushings of plain bearings. A characteristic feature of babbitt alloys is that they are a plastic mass with evenly interspersed hard crystals, which serve as reference points for the shaft journals and, under uneven loading, are pressed deep into the soft base. The shaft pressure on the liner in this case is evenly distributed over the entire sliding surface, which allows the bearing to withstand a large load. The hardness of the babbits is always less than the hardness of the material of the shaft journal, so the surface of the babbit bearing is subjected to more intense wear. The main performance indicators of babbitt bearings are low coefficient of friction and structural heterogeneity. The role of babbitt filling in thrust and thrust bearings is different. In bearing liners, babbit plays the role of an anti-friction material operated in semi-dry friction mode. In most thrust bearings, the segments are located in an oil bath, and there is practically no semi-dry friction mode. The wear of the babbit filling causes an increase in the radial clearance in the bearings and the appearance of dull metallic knocks during engine operation; to eliminate this defect, the babbitt is refilled or the liners are replaced. The thickness of the babbitt fill is usually 3 - 6 mm for cast iron, 2 - 4 mm for steel and 0.5 - 3 mm for bronze liners. Smaller values &©|8203;&©|8203;refer to shaft diameters of the order of 50 mm, larger ones to shaft diameters of 150 - 2005 mm. The width and number of grooves are chosen for design reasons. The thickness of the filling is ***ermined on the basis that in the event of the rotor moving, when the babbit is melted, it does not touch the diaphragm. Backlog of babbit filling and cracks on it are not allowed. Filling bearings with babbitt is not a simple matte |
